Fans of foldable smartphones are getting their money’s worth these days. First, Samsung introduced the Z Flip4 and Z Fold4, then Motorola followed with the Razr 2022. Now Xiaomi is following suit and surprisingly announced the successor to the Mi MIX Fold, which was released in 2021. The new Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 is the thinnest foldable in the world so far, and it comes with a Leica triple camera.
In China, the manufacturer has now officially announced the new Xiaomi Mix Fold 2, which, like its predecessor from last year, might not find its way to Germany – details on that are not yet available, though.
From a technical point of view, the Chinese company is bringing out the big guns. Or particularly thin guns, if you will. The smartphone is only 5.4 mm thick when opened, and 11.2 millimeters when closed. That is another three millimeters less than Samsung’s new top model, the Z Fold4.
Xiaomi also installs an 8.02 large OLED screen inside, complete with LTPO 2.0 and an adaptive refresh rate of 120 Hz. It comes with a resolution of 2,160 x 1,914 pixels and gets a maximum brightness of 1,300 nits. The typical brightness is 1,000 nits.
The external display in 21:9 format has a size of 6.56 inches. The Mix Fold2 also relies on an LTPO AMOLED panel with 120 Hz and a brightness of 1,000 nits. It is also protected against scratches by Gorilla Glass Victus.
Technically, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 also relies on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, while 12 GB of RAM is offered with up to 1 terabyte of system storage. At 4,500 mAh, the battery is smaller than in the predecessor, which had a capacity of 5,020 mAh at the time.
Fast Charge with up to 67 watts of charging power is also offered, which should top the 37 minutes from 0 to 100 percent of the first. Xiaomi did not mention further technical details, but advertises Harman Kardon speakers including Dolby Vision.
Furthermore, the camera setup of the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 turns out to be exciting. On the back, the foldable relies on a rectangular camera module complete with Leica branding, which is, however, also supposed to use the “professional optical lenses” of the traditional manufacturer.
Here, you combine a 50-megapixel main camera complete with Sony IMX766 sensor, optical image stabilization (OIS) and open aperture of f/1.8 with a 13-MP ultra-wide-angle camera (f/2.4), as well as an 8-megapixel telephoto lens (f/2.6).
Xiaomi quantifies the focal lengths at least for the two additional cameras: thus, the ultra-wide-angle camera offers a focal mode of 15 mm, which is really very wide-angle, as well as 45 mm for the telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom. At least the main camera records videos in 8K resolution.
In addition, there is a special optical image stabilizer with SMA, while two Leica looks are supposed to give the pictures that certain something. In addition, there are more Leica filters and the “classic Leica shutter noise”, while photos can be recorded in the frame rate with up to 30 frames per second. The selfie camera resolves at 20 megapixels.
Definitely impressive specs for a foldable smartphone, though of course it doesn’t come close to the own camera flagship 12S Ultra complete with 1-inch sensor.
The Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 has so far been unveiled exclusively for the Chinese market, where it is scheduled for release in October 2022. Pre-sales will start from August 16. It is unclear whether the foldable will also make it to Germany. The price starts at a RRP of 8,999 yuan, which is equivalent to about 1,295 euros. The top model with 12 GB RAM and 1 TB storage is priced at 11,999 yuan, which is just under 1,727 Euros.
