The DJI Mavic 2 Zoom is a drone that takes the impressive portability of the original Mavic Pro and adds not only professional features for content creators, but also all-around smart collision sensors, and rounds it off with a 2x optical zoom lens that provides a whole new perspective making this one of the best drones for video and aerial photography.

The DJI Mavic 2 Zoom is a slightly different version of the high-end consumer drone instead of the Mavic 2 Pro’s large one-inch sensor, it features a 2x optical zoom lens. This was a fairly new approach when both drones were launched in August 2018, we’re used to camera manufacturers launching slightly different variations of the same body design, but for drones, this was a new strategy and reflected their growing status as serious photographic tools and not just toys for the sky.

Drone photography and videography has been around for a few years now, thanks to the popularity of DJI drones and others. But if you’ve ever looked at drone photos on Instagram, you’ve probably noticed that drone pictures and videos all look very similar and can get boring pretty quickly. DJI’s new Mavic 2 drones are here to change that, thanks to improved image quality of the Mavic 2 Pro and the greater image composition flexibility of the Mavic 2 Zoom.

The Mavic 2 Zoom features the same foldable design as the Mavic 2 Pro. This means that drone can be easily folded to almost half its flight size for transport. Add to that the fact that it only weighs 905g, and it quickly becomes clear just how portable this drone really is. Of course, there are smaller drones with the same 1/2.3-inch sensor, but they don’t offer an optical zoom lens and their small size means they aren’t as stable in the air as the Zoom when there’s even a little wind.

It zoom’s body is compact and rectangular the front arms rotate outward, while the rear arms flip up and into position. It’s worth using the included gimbal protector if you’re transporting the drone between shots, as it can be a bit vulnerable if unprotected. When you turn the drone on, you need to remember to remove the gimbal protector, as the drone will calibrate the gimbal as soon as it is turned on. To turn on the zoom, simply press and hold the button on top of the battery.

The Mavic 2 Zoom features the same controller as its sibling, the Mavic 2 Pro. This accommodates smartphones of all sizes (up to a maximum length of 160 mm or a maximum thickness of 8.5 mm), which are inserted into the folding arms and connected to the controller via the included data cables. Video can be shot in video equivalent of JPEG, using picture profiles to set color styles if you want to simply download your footage from the memory card without the need for color correction. However, if you plan to incorporate the footage into a professional workflow, you can also shoot in D-Cinelike, a raw video format that allows for color correction and easier color matching to footage shot in this or any other raw video format.

As for video formats, video can be recorded in 4K at up to 30p, 2.7K at up to 60p, and Full HD at maximum of 120p. Videos can be recorded in MP4 or MOV (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, HEVC/H.265) formats. So in this area, it is identical to the Mavic 2 Pro, although it uses D-Cinelike instead of D-Log M and lacks 10-bit HDR.

The Mavic 2 Zoom offers the best flight performance DJI can provide. Both maximum flight time of 31 minutes and the top speed of 45 mph are tops. The Mavic 2 Zoom is rock solid on takeoff and landing, incredibly responsive in flight, and can even fight off a decent breeze. You won’t be disappointed with how this drone flies. The Mavic 2 Zoom has all the basic autonomous flight features you could want, including cable camera, waypoints, and return to origin.

In addition, the autonomous tracking feature has been greatly improved. This feature allows you to identify an object on the video downlink screen and then have the drone automatically follow that object. In previous DJI versions of this technology, the subject would often drift toward or even beyond the edge of the screen if they were moving too fast. The new version is still not perfect and can be a bit jerky, but it does a better job of keeping the subject in the center of the frame, even if the speed increases a bit.

If you’re looking for a drone with optical zoom, the Mavic 2 Zoom is a well-equipped machine at a relatively affordable price. However, if you don’t need the zoom, you can get better video quality for significantly less money. The value of this product depends on what you want to achieve. DJI Mavic 2 Zoom will be cheaper – $1249. On the one hand, this quadcopter is simpler in terms of camera features: a 12-megapixel sensor with 1/2.3 inches.

The main chip is in the name – the lens of this drone covers a focal length of 24-48 (equivalent), which means that the Quadro copter has a double optical zoom. In addition, there is a double digital zoom, and when you shoot video in Full HD at the expense of cropping, the quality is not lost, and the focal length increases to 96 mm (eq.). If you’re toying with the idea of buying the Air, spend the extra money and get the Zoom. If you’re flirting with the Phantom 4 Pro, the Mavic 2 Pro is a very good alternative in a smaller package.
